In the vast wilderness of northern Kenya’s Laikipia Plateau lies a safari experience unlike any other. Ol Lentille isn’t just another luxury lodge — it represents a revolutionary model of community-owned conservation that has transformed how travellers can experience authentic African culture alongside world-class wildlife viewing.

Set within 40,000 acres of pristine conservancy land jointly owned by two Maasai and two Samburu communities, Ol Lentille stands as the only luxury community-owned lodge in Kenya.

This isn’t merely a marketing distinction — it fundamentally shapes every aspect of your stay, from the warm welcome you receive to the deep cultural immersion opportunities that simply aren’t available elsewhere in the country.

For discerning travellers seeking meaningful connections with local communities alongside exceptional safari experiences, Ol Lentille offers something increasingly rare: genuine authenticity without compromising on comfort or exclusivity.

🌿 The Ol Lentille Story: Conservation Through Community Ownership

🎯 A Vision Realised

The story of Ol Lentille began with founders Gill and John Elias, who built the lodge on community-owned land before donating it to the local community. Under a long-term management agreement, this visionary approach has enabled several Maasai and Samburu communities to contribute land to what is now the Ol Lentille Conservancy — 40,000 acres of protected wilderness that has been returned to life and re-wilded, available exclusively to lodge guests.

This model means that when you stay at Ol Lentille, you are genuinely a guest of the local community. The hospitality you experience comes from people whose ancestral lands these are, creating connections that feel authentic rather than performative.

🦁 The Conservancy Landscape

The Ol Lentille Conservancy spans the far northern escarpment of the Laikipia Plateau, encompassing wooded hills, dramatic valleys, and rugged kopjes. The landscape supports remarkable biodiversity, including the endangered African wild dog, greater kudu, leopard, striped and spotted hyena, and klipspringer.

🎭 Unparalleled Cultural Experiences

❤️ The Heart of Ol Lentille

What truly distinguishes Ol Lentille from every other safari lodge in Kenya is the depth of cultural access afforded to guests. As you are received as a guest of the community, you gain entrée to experiences that would otherwise be inaccessible.

🏘️ Visiting a Manyatta

Step inside a traditional Maasai or Samburu homestead and experience daily life up close. Learn about the construction of the manyatta, how roles are divided among family members, and how life events are celebrated.

You may find yourself sitting inside a house with one of the mamas, sharing a cup of smoky Maasai tea — an experience guests describe as “very real and always heartwarming.”

An Evening at the Manyatta elevates this experience further. Arrive as the sun sets and herders bring their animals home for the night. Sit around the fire with elders, sharing conversation and perhaps a glass of maratina (local brew made from fermented aloe vera and honey). Dinner features roast goat and curries prepared by the lodge chef, served at a table set beneath an acacia tree with lanterns blending into the starry sky.

🔥 Warrior Initiations and Ceremonies

For those fortunate enough to visit during the right season, Ol Lentille offers access to significant cultural ceremonies.

  • Maasai Emorata (warrior initiations) represent the most important event in a young man’s life, beginning with circumcision and followed by rituals marking the transition to warrior status.*
  • Weddings and blessings are elaborate, colourful affairs that guests are often invited to join. These festivities begin during the day and continue through the night, with guests sometimes participating in dances that last until dawn.*

🎶 The Singing Wells

One of the most extraordinary experiences available at Ol Lentille is a visit to the Singing Wells — a tradition unique to the Maasai and Samburu tribes in this part of Kenya.

During the dry season (January–March and August–October), communities dig deep wells in dry riverbeds to find water for their livestock.

Warriors form human pyramids inside the wells, passing buckets of water to the surface while singing hauntingly beautiful songs to their cows. These chants pacify the animals and signal that it’s time to drink — a powerful and moving experience seldom witnessed by outsiders.

💃 Warrior Dances

Guests can attend warrior dances either at the lodge’s open field or at a village. These are described as “powerful and electric events which irresistibly draw everyone attending into their pulsating rhythm.”

🏪 Market and School Visits

Experience the rich culture of northern Kenya’s tribes — Maasai, Samburu, Turkana, Pokot, and Rendille — intermingling at local markets. Visits to schools supported by Ol Lentille offer insight into the lodge’s community development initiatives.

🦁 Wildlife and Safari Activities

🚙 Game Drives

The Ol Lentille Conservancy supports impressive wildlife populations. Game drives reveal elephant, leopard, zebra (including the endangered Grevy’s zebra), klipspringer, greater kudu, and both spotted and striped hyena. The conservancy’s 40,000 acres encompass hills, valleys, and wooded areas, providing diverse habitats for wildlife viewing.

🚶 Walking Safaris

Guided walking safaris with Samburu and Maasai warriors offer a special way to explore their ancient lands. These walks provide beautiful scenery, wildlife encounters, and cultural insights that vehicle-based safaris cannot match.

Recent guests highlight hiking Ol Lentille peak and walking the riverbed toward a delicious bush breakfast as trip highlights.

🐪 Camel Safaris

Scenic camel rides along the river, led by Maasai warriors, offer a traditional and peaceful way to experience the landscape. These safaris typically last about 90 minutes.

🏍️ Quad Biking

For those seeking adventure, quad biking from the lodge allows exploration of the conservancy and visits to local villages.

🚁 Helicopter Excursions

At additional cost, guests can arrange exceptionally scenic helicopter rides over the wild and rugged parts of northern Kenya.

🦜 Birdwatching

The conservancy’s diverse habitats support abundant birdlife, making Ol Lentille an excellent destination for ornithology enthusiasts.

💆 Wellness and Relaxation

After days filled with adventure and cultural immersion, Ol Lentille offers opportunities for rest and rejuvenation. The lodge features spa facilities, and the infinity pool provides a refreshing retreat with spectacular views over the conservancy.

The peaceful atmosphere that envelops Ol Lentille has been described by guests as “the most serene location we’ve ever visited.”
