Wilderness Expeditions
In pursuit of adventure and wild places, we travel to Lake Turkana, Shaba National Park, the Aberdares, Mount Elgon National Park, Buffalo Springs and Mount Kenya. Walking, horse-riding, fly-fishing, fishing on Turkana for Nile Perch and walking are some of the aspects of these trips.
These expeditions are for adventurous people who want to explore and without the burden of expectation of what they must see. Each trip is different, even to the same place and you will be accompanied by a guide and small crew of support staff.
Walking Safaris
n the heart of Kenya, the Laikipia Plateau has all the ingredients for a top-class walking destination, with perfect temperatures for expeditions on foot. Shaped by volcanic forces, the terrain is varied, with plenty of rocky hills and wooded valleys, and water sources, fed from the moorland slopes of Mount Kenya and the Aberdare Range, giving Laikipia a wealth of wildlife. Walkers spot local specials such as the gerenuk, reticulated giraffe, Günther’s dik-dik, Grévy’s zebra, and squadrons of gorgeous vulturine guineafowl.
Laikipia Wilderness has started offering multi-day walks, thanks to gaining access to a greatly expanded safari area, which now totals 70,000 acres. The walks are guided by a qualified walking guide and local Samburu tracker. The type of guides who relishes getting on foot to track leopards or lions, but also knows how to mix in time to simply sit and enjoy being in nature.
Multi-day walking guests will spend their first and last night at camp, and the trail nights at a mobile camp, relocated each day by vehicle. The standard format has a minimum of three nights in the wilds, although with the area available, this can easily be extended.
Black leopards in Laikipia
Originally captured on camera by Will Burrard Lucas in 2019, Laikipia has become famous for sightings of black leopards. These melanistic cats are extremely rare and we are privileged to have them, one female cub was born and raised less than 1km from camp. She is seen fairly regularly and is especially relaxed around vehicles which provides us with the most impressive sightings. She is a wild animal and can be unpredictable whenever she likes as a result so there is no guarantee, we recommend staying longer if this is your focus (4 – 7 nights). There are at least 3 other individuals that have been seen in the conservancy.
We limit the number of vehicles at a sighting and the amount of time spent with the leopard. Those with a Black Leopard private vehicle (BLPV) or a Black Leopard shared vehicle (BLSV) will be given one of the priority slots at a sighting. Please book and pay for your Black Leopard vehicle at the start of your booking process. If you do not feel the need for a BL vehicle but you would still like to be given the chance to see the black leopard then normal vehicles will be rotated into a sighting as/if/when there is space.
Booking a black leopard vehicle does not guarantee sightings as she is a wild animal. This is only for a priority slot at a sighting where the number of vehicles is limited. It is not necessary for all clients.
Film crews will need to pay a separate filming fee and book 3 x BLPV so that no clients are impacted.
Rules and Regulations at a black leopard sighting
- Rules and Regulations at a black leopard sighting
- Kindly note that all black leopard-focused drives will be restricted to 6 am and 8 pm respectively in order to allow the leopard time to be a leopard.
- The spotlights have been fitted with red filters.
- In case of any signs of stress, your guide has the right to end a sighting at any point.
- Kindly respect the leopard at all sightings.
- If she is hunting seriously then no vehicles can move.
- If she makes a kill then we switch off the spotlights so she can hide the kill from other leopards (who were following our spotlights to find her and steal her kill).
- If she leaves the kill for later then we can continue to follow her.
- If she stays on the kill then we leave her alone to eat it.
