Kibo Safari Camp: The Complete Guide to Amboseli’s Best-Value Safari Camp
Experience the magic of Amboseli with Mount Kilimanjaro as your backdrop
Introduction: Where Kilimanjaro Meets the Elephants
Imagine waking before dawn, stepping onto your private veranda with a steaming cup of Kenyan coffee, and watching the first pink light of morning illuminate the snow-capped peak of Mount Kilimanjaro. Below, the vast plains of Amboseli stretch out like a living canvas, dotted with acacia trees and traversed by some of Africa’s most magnificent wildlife.
This is the daily reality at Kibo Safari Camp – one of Amboseli National Park’s most beloved safari accommodations. As you plan your Kenyan safari adventure, choosing the right camp can make the difference between a good trip and an unforgettable one. Let us show you why Kibo Safari Camp deserves a place on your itinerary.
Why Kibo Safari Camp Stands Out
Kibo Safari Camp has earned an exceptional reputation among travelers, consistently ranking as the number one accommodation facility in Amboseli on TripAdvisor. With guest ratings exceeding 4.9 out of 5 across multiple booking platforms, this family-run camp has mastered the art of combining warm Kenyan hospitality with excellent value.
What sets Kibo apart isn’t just its stunning location or comfortable accommodations – it’s the intangible quality that guests consistently mention in their reviews: the feeling of coming home. The camp’s staff, from the welcoming reception team to the talented kitchen crew, have created an atmosphere where every guest feels genuinely cared for.
The camp’s unique position just outside Kimana Gate – only a 3-5 minute drive from Amboseli National Park’s main entrance – offers the perfect balance of convenient park access and peaceful seclusion on private land.
Location: At the Foot of Africa’s Highest Peak
Prime Position for Park Access
Kibo Safari Camp’s location is arguably one of its greatest assets. Situated in Kimana, Kajiado South, the camp sits just outside the official park boundaries, which means you’ll benefit from:
- Quick park access: Less than 5 minutes to Kimana Gate, allowing you to be among the first vehicles entering the park for early morning game drives
- Private land setting: A secure, fenced environment that keeps wildlife out while you sleep peacefully
- Unrestricted views: Sweeping vistas of Mount Kilimanjaro from virtually every corner of the camp
The Kilimanjaro Experience
Amboseli is famously described as the place to be “if enormous herds of elephants silhouetted against Africa’s highest peak is your idea of safari perfection”. At Kibo Safari Camp, this iconic view isn’t just a possibility – it’s your daily companion.
The mountain reveals itself most spectacularly at dawn and dusk. Time your sundowner on the bar terrace for a clear evening, as Kilimanjaro often hides behind clouds during the day but emerges dramatically as the sun sets.
Accommodation: Comfortable Safari Tents with Unbeatable Views
Tent Options for Every Traveler
Kibo Safari Camp offers 73 self-contained safari tents, with configurations to suit couples, families, and groups. The camp also features a newer Private Wing with 10 additional tents, perfect for those seeking a more exclusive experience.
Each tent comes equipped with:
- Custom-made bush-log beds with mosquito nets

- Private verandas facing Mount Kilimanjaro
- Locally crafted furniture with African-inspired décor
- Complimentary bottled water and daily housekeeping
Room configurations include single, double, twin, triple, and family setups, ensuring accommodation for virtually any group size.
What Guests Say About the Tents
Reviews consistently praise the tents for being spacious, clean, and comfortable. One guest described their tent as “like a 5-star room, fully serviced”, while another noted that despite being a tent, “it did not get cold at all, which was surprising!”
Dining: Fresh from Farm to Table
A Culinary Experience to Remember
Dining at Kibo Safari Camp is a highlight that guests frequently single out in their reviews. The camp’s open-air restaurant, shaded by spreading acacia trees, serves generous buffet spreads with something for every palate.
What makes the food special?
- Farm-fresh ingredients: Fruits and vegetables are picked straight from the camp’s own farm
- Wood-burning pizza oven: Freshly fired pizzas that guests rave about
- Diverse menu: Options catering to both vegetarian and non-vegetarian diets
- Grill stations: Different grilled specialties each evening
One delighted guest proclaimed: “The food is the best we’ve had in Kenya, a lot of choice and absolutely delicious”. Another highlighted that “chef Andrew is such a brilliant cook”.
The Bar and Bonfire
After a dusty game drive, the well-stocked bar is the perfect spot for a cold Tusker beer or refreshing sundowner. As evening falls, the crackling bonfire becomes the social hub of the camp – a wonderful place to swap safari stories with fellow travelers.
