Location & Access: A Ridge with Unparalleled Views

Where is Sirai House?

Sirai House is located in the Laikipia region of Kenya, within the expansive 32,000-acre Borana Conservancy . It sits at the foot of Mount Kenya, on the crest of a hill within a private 250-acre estate . The property takes its name from the sirai—the Maasai word for the euphorbia trees that dot the ridge, marking its refined position above the plains .

How to Get There

Access to Sirai House is an adventure in itself, designed to enhance the feeling of remote luxury:

  • By Air: Guests typically take a 50-minute scheduled or private charter flight from Nairobi’s Wilson Airport or Jomo Kenyatta International Airport to one of the nearby airstrips (Borana, Lewa, or Nanyuki) .
  • Road Transfer: Upon landing, you will be collected in a custom-built 4×4 vehicle for a scenic, 30-minute game drive transfer across the conservancy to the house .
  • Helicopter: For the ultimate in convenience and views, helicopter transfers can be arranged to the property’s private landing pad .

Accommodation: Six Exquisitely Designed Suites

Suite Accommodation

Sirai House accommodates a maximum of 12 guests in six individually designed, stand-alone suites, making it ideal for families or private groups . Each suite is a masterpiece of design, blending contemporary luxury with natural Kenyan materials.

Suite Highlights:

  • Suite 2: Located near the main terrace, this suite offers stunning views, a private terrace, and an outdoor rain shower .
  • Suites 3 and 4: These adjoining suites are perfect for families, sharing an interconnecting drawing room ideal for cocktails or card games. Each has its own veranda and outdoor shower .

Safari Experiences & Activities in the Borana Conservancy

Horse riding safaris in Kenya

The true magic of Sirai House lies in its location within the Borana Conservancy, one of Kenya’s last strongholds for black and white rhino . All activities are tailored to your group’s preferences, led by expert guides, and often include the services of an armed scout for walking safaris.

Key Safari Activities:

1. Private Game Drives
Explore Borana and the neighbouring Lewa Downs in a private, open 4×4 Land Cruiser, equipped with leather seats, fridges, and USB ports . Witness a rich diversity of wildlife including lions, elephants, cheetahs, leopards, buffalo, Grevy’s zebra, African wild dogs, and both black and white rhino .

2. Night Game Drives
A major advantage of staying in a private conservancy is the freedom to explore after dark. Experience the thrill of spotting nocturnal wildlife such as leopards, aardvarks, bush babies, and hyenas on a flashlight-lit night drive .

3. Horseback Safaris
The Borana region is famed for its exceptional horse-riding safaris. This is the best way to get close to wildlife, as animals are often more relaxed around horses than vehicles. With three sets of stables, rides are tailored for all levels, from beginners to advanced riders .

4. Guided Walking Safaris and Fly Camping
Immerse yourself in the African bush on a guided walking safari, accompanied by an expert guide and armed scout. For the ultimate adventure, fly camping involves a walking safari followed by an overnight stay in a luxurious mobile camp under the stars, complete with gourmet dining .

5. Conservation and Rhino Tracking
Join Borana’s scout team on a conservation patrol to support the conservancy’s vital rhino protection mission. This is an unparalleled opportunity to learn about the challenges and triumphs of modern conservation .

6. Helicopter Safaris
Charter a helicopter for aerial journeys to Mount Kenya, Lake Turkana (“The Jade Sea”), the Suguta Valley, or secluded picnic spots inaccessible by land .

7. Cultural Visits
Engage with local communities through visits to nearby Maasai villages, offering insights into traditional culture, beadwork, and local education sponsorships .

8. Other Activities

  • E-Bike Safaris: Explore the conservancy on battery-assisted bikes .
  • Ngare Ndare Blue Pools: Trek through ancient forest corridors to swim in turquoise pools and jump off waterfalls .

Cuisine & Dining: A Feast for the Senses

Food is central to the Sirai House experience, with an emphasis on fresh, locally-sourced ingredients and flexible dining.

  • Farm-to-Table Concept: Fresh ingredients are sourced daily from the on-site shamba (kitchen garden) and Borana cattle herds .
  • Flexible Dining: Guests can choose where to dine, from sunrise breakfasts on the terrace and relaxed lunches by the pool, to candlelit bush dinners under the stars or elegant five-course banquets in the grand dining hall .
  • The Wine Cellar: With over 3,000 bottles of handpicked global vintages, the cellar is a wine lover’s paradise, offering expertly curated pairings for the chef’s creations .
