Lolldaiga House, built in 2016, is a private family home in the magnificent setting of Lolldaiga Ranch. A sprawling old settler-style house, it is furnished with great elegance and every comfort is provided. Perched on a ridge amongst the Lolldaiga Hills, it has exceptional views of Northern Frontier District stretching away below and to the south are Mt Kenya’s snowy peaks.

The house has six ensuite bedrooms, each well-appointed and cheerful in effortless farmhouse chic. The rooms open up through wide French windows to tremendous views of the African bush; you can sit on your private verandah sipping your early morning tea quite away from the world.

Game drives on Lolldaiga are a brilliant way to see wildlife, going further and further into the bush and exploring other beautiful locations nearby. There is a wide range of game on the farm, from lions to dikdiks, buffalo to leopards and a wonderful array of birds. You can look forward to early morning outings to see the sun rise over the ranch, topped with a delectable bush breakfast, or else afternoon drives ending with well-earned sundowners when your gin and tonic can be enjoyed from a whole new perspective; maybe the silhouette of a giraffe against a fiery red sky.

Lolldaiga Ranch offers a rare chance to experience the bush on foot. Knowledgeable armed guides will lead you around the area, sharing their expert understanding of the landscape and wildlife. The intimacy of a bushwalk is something not experienced when driving. Smaller things – and sights and sounds – can take on more meaning.

Another activity available is riding. Should you wish to see Laikipia on horse-back, this can be organized on nearby ranches. This is probably the best way to get around and there are always with new vistas to be enjoyed.

Lolldaiga Ranch

Lolldaiga Hills Ranch is a stunning fifty-thousand-acre cattle ranch and wildlife conservancy, just 20 km northwest of Mount Kenya.

Lolldaiga is an historical landscape with well-documented archaeological sites including cave paintings and burial grounds. Over the last five centuries the region has been inhabited by the nomadic Laikipiak Maasai, from whose language the name “Lolldaiga” comes, “Daiga” meaning braid.

Lolldaiga Ranch has been managed as a cattle ranch by one family for three generations, always with a strong regard for wildlife and conservation. The present owner, Robert Wells, has encouraged a series of long-running research studies focusing upon the wildlife and biodiversity of Lolldaiga, archaeology, climate change, and sustainable land management.

Lolldaiga Hills Ranch began a fuel wood collection programme fifteen years ago, in response to the felling of indigenous trees by people along the Timau River. It aims to provide fuel wood security to local communities in a sustainable manner with one hundred and twenty local women collecting dead wood and branches every week. The river defines and flows along the southern border of the Ranch. Riverine forest is one of the rarest habitats in Laikipia and has a broad and magnificent range of flora and fauna, including suni, bushpig, leopard, Colobus monkey and African clawless otter.

The ranch is also committed to covering school fees for students and the salary of teachers from neighbouring areas. This programme, the Lolldaiga Hills Ranch Education Sponsorship Programme (LHRESP) aims to support students and teachers in nearby communities.
